Guadua is a neo-tropical type thorny clumping bamboo that ranges in size from moderate to very large species. Physically, Guadua angustifolia, is the largest neo-tropical bamboo. It usually grows at low altitudes (below 1,500m), but can be found up to 2,500 mts.
For architectural purposes, Guadua is the favorite of the world's bamboo species. Its diameter is consistent for the first 15 meters and then at the top it becomes elegantly tapered. These features have attracted the attention of civil engineers, architects, academics, designers, and artists. Environmentally, Guadua is more effective at removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than most other tropical forest plants. Ongoing studies in Colombia have now been coordinated by the Environmental Bamboo Foundation and the results are stunning.
On the basis of such studies, Japan and the Netherlands have both undertaken massive forestation projects as a way of earning so-called "carbon credits" to offset industrial pollution.
Guadua construction is also earthquake-resistant. The 1999 Armenia earthquake proved this when many houses built with Guadua in the 1930s survived, whilst a large number of modern houses collapsed. Costa Rica reported similar experiences in earlier earthquakes there.
In 1986, the Autonomous Regional Corporation of Quindio (CRQ), established the National Center for the Study of Guadua Bamboo, in order to promote studies, research and new technologies in the propagation, management and innovations in the use of bamboo craft. The National Center for the Study of Guadua Bamboo offers tourists and visitors guided tours by experts with experience and knowledge on the subject of GUADUA.
To get to the Research Centre get the bus to Cordoba from Armenia and ask the driver to drop you off at their front door . There is a tour charge of 8200 COP. Refreshments are available and it is possible to stay at the centre.
